Accessing
global HS-based tariffs
Exporters will commonly want to know what a particular
tariff is for a specified product entering a given country.
With so many countries to consider, where does one find
this information - it would be tedious to visit the customs
department of every country?
Fortunately, the UNCTAD
Trade Analysis Information System
[ (or TRAINS for short) is a comprehensive computerised
information system at the HS-based tariff line level covering
tariff, para-tariff and non-tariff measures, as well as
import flows by origin for more than 140 countries. This
data is available for download and analysis on a fee basis.
Alternatively, you can access the database
online here.
At this site, you can query the online database to determine
the tariff applied to a particular product (based on its
HS code) by a given country or range of countries. The
system also provides an indication of the import volumes
and the export countries that are supplying the product
in question to the countries selected.
This makes it possible for the exporter to determine (a)
what the tariffs are for a specific product and country,
as well as (b) which other countries are supplying the
product concerned to the countries in question - very useful
information to determine the market opportunities for the
specified product in the given country!
